Texas Doctors Working to End Gun Violence

About Us

Our Mission

Our mission is to lead physicians and local communities in our State as they advocate for a fair and affordable healthcare system and for the prevention of gun violence through public safety measures and common-sense legislation.

Our Vision

We envision a country where every healthcare professional advocates for stronger gun violence prevention laws and for responsible gun ownership. In Texas we want to shape the legislative dialogue about recognizing gun violence as a preventable public health epidemic.

Our Legislative Priorities

Gun Violence

Common sense, evidence-based policies to prevent gun injuries and death, and public education aimed to enhance gun safety at home.

Women’s and Children’s Health

Access to preventative and medical care for women, including easy access to contraception, access to safe, high-quality prenatal and birthing care, and the extension of Medicaid coverage for a full year postpartum.

Climate Justice

Educating providers and the community about the effects of climate change on health and access to care.

Access to Healthcare

Medicaid expansion, increased Medicaid coverage for a full year postpartum, and increased Medicaid reimbursement for providers to parity with Medicare.

Behavioral Health

Improve access through primary care (integrated behavioral model), enforcement of mental health insurance parity, and advocacy for suicide prevention initiatives, including limiting access to firearms and raising awareness among providers on ACEs and trauma-informed care.

Our Efforts in Focus

Community Engagement

TDSR will continue to develop long-term partnerships with community and state stakeholders to address a range of social, economic, political, and environmental factors that affect health and the well-being of Texans in addition to our gun violence prevention efforts. The development of the Advisory Board is a good first step in this direction.

Legislative Advocacy

TDSR strives to develop an effective advocacy strategy which will help legislators and their constituents learn and understand how current loopholes in legislation jeopardize the safety of our communities. This will empower constituents to ask their representatives to support and or sponsor legislation which will improve gun violence prevention.

Membership Development

We are working on developing a 5-year growth plan as a membership organization. Our target population are medical professionals, students, and advocates for gun violence prevention and social justice. We are also looking for, recruiting and nourishing the activists of the future which will keep this organization alive and thriving to continue its mission.

Marketing and Fundraising

We need your donations to develop organizational capacity which will allow us to have an effective fund-raising structure through marketing. Additionally, we welcome submissions of articles, blog posts, or commentaries of interest for members and medical professionals.
