Texas Doctors for Social Responsibility
Minutes, Membership Dinner Meeting, India Palace, San Antonio, TX
January 4, 2018, 7 pm.
We were very happy to have Dr. Lisa Cleveland as our guest speaker at this dinner meeting. She presented her work with addicted moms and their babies, and the projects her group is actively working on to keep mom and baby together and to provide them with a safe environment where mom can get comprehensive medical and mental health care. Her research projects are outlined in the enclosed brochure. The presentation was followed by spirited discussion during the question and answer period. There was also discussion on strategies to capture these women early in their pregnancies so that they’ll be given comprehensive prenatal care to minimize pregnancy and perinatal complications.
Dr. Cleveland’s work is aligned with our goal which is to work with community organizations and institutions to develop a safety net, a medical home where these women and their babies are given comprehensive, medical and mental health care so that they can heal and keep their babies. The plan is to continue working with Dr. Cleveland and her group beginning with a working group which includes Lew Dick, Rudy Urby, Evelyn Delgado, Ted Fox and me.
Also at this meeting, another notable achievement from our board member Leo Lopez was talked about. He was recently awarded a fellowship at the National Clinicians Scholars program at Yale. After the welcome and self-introduction. We are so proud of him.
Later in the meeting, Diana Arevalo, State Representative, District 116 drop by to say hello to the attendees and to talk about her support to health initiatives in the house of Representatives. Cynthia Cabral, communications director at Senator Jose Menendez’ office also stopped by to say hello and convey Senator Menendez support.
Thank you to the attendees: Erica Salinas, Dr. Johan Swaan, Dr. Leo Lopez, Ted Fox, Victoria Estrada, Dr. Rudy Urby, Javier Roman, Linda Roman, Dr. Alex Kenton, Dr. Lisa Cleveland, Rep. Diana Arevalo, Cynthia Cabral, and Magdalena McCall. The next monthly membership dinner meeting is scheduled on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 7 pm.
